Meet Certified Automotive Detailer Brian Engcabo
Brian Engcabo started Purity Automotive Detailing Specialists of Hawaii 30 years ago as a mobile service at a time when automotive detailing was not yet well-known among the general public. In those days, Brian had accounts with large companies like Alamo Rental Car and several used car dealerships who were more familiar with the art and science of detailing. In their business, used car lots understood the benefits of having someone revitalizing an aging automobiles so they could get a better price for it, while rental car agencies didn't have the workforce to properly maintain fleets of cars at the "new car" level. People renting a vehicle, especially in a tourist area like Hawaii, expected their rental to either be new or look and smell new!
About the time Brian got started in the business, individual car owners didn't know the difference between detailing and pin-striping. Brian began educating customers about oxidized paint, fading, and showed them how to maintain interiors so they did not stink or suffer as much from everyday wear and tear.
Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, the price of automobiles began to rise and people began to finance their vehicles for longer periods of time, making their vehicle a long-term investment rather than a short-term commodity. Although current technology had not yet reached the level it is today in terms of techniques, equipment and products, detailing was becoming popular with the public because it provided a way for them to maintain their "investment" at a "like new" level of clean. This meant they could drive an aging vehicle longer without it looking 8 to 10 years old, and even better, they could get more for it when they sold it or traded it in.
After 10 years in the business, Brian got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel the world with a job as a refrigeration technician onboard cargo ships traveling the high seas. He had acquired a degree and certification in refrigeration and when the opportunity to pursue it came about, he would spend the next 20 years onboard a ship traversing the world's warmest and coldest seas and oceans.
Technology had greatly changed the detailing industry by the time he retired from his refrigeration job and he often says it was as if everything had come full circle. He picked up Purity Automotive Detailing right where he left off and over the past year - and in spite of the COVID-19 epidemic, Brian has revived his once flourishing detailing business with more services, better training, and higher technology than ever!
To do that, Brian jumped right back in by attending certification training with one of today's premier detailing trainers, Renny Doyle of Detailing Success, known as The Detailer of Air Force One. Doyle has spent the past 17 years restoring and preserving the original presidential jet Air Force One on display at Seattle's Museum of Flight.
Currently Brian holds a Detailing Business, Paint Correction, Headlight Repair, and Ceramic Coatings Certification from Detailing Succeess, which qualifies him for the 2021 Air Force One Detailing Team that will be announced next spring; and he also earned a dual certification (CD SV) from the International Detailing Association (IDA).
Brian can now offer advanced detailing techniques like paint correction and the application of ceramic coatings, as well as innovative equipment like European steam and stain removal that is far superior to the old Bissell Brian used to use in the early 1990s! Products like ceramic coatings now protect car paint and its gloss for years rather than months and weeks like waxes and sealants. And antibacterial treatments and protection for interiors are just a few examples of the new technology Brian can offer.
